Changes in the zinc content in the meadow sward under conditions of a long-term static fertilizer experiment (Czarny Potok)

Changes in the zinc concentration in the meadow sward were studied in a long-term fertilizer experiment set up on a mountain meadow in 1968. The plot was localized at 720 meters above sea level on Dystric Cambisol. Eight fertilizer treatments with or without Ca were used. Zn concentration in the sward decreased over the period studied. The decrease was more influenced by the time than by fertilization, P concentration in the sward or soil and acidification. The mountain meadow communities were shaped by a long-term (over 30 years) NPK treatment, the yields varied from 6.7 to 7.1 t/ha and the annual quantity of absorbed Zn ranged between 233 and 256 g Zn/ha dry weight. The biggest amount of Zn removed with the harvest exceeded 500 g Zn/ha/year. Sward yields were slightly higher in limed than in unlimed plots (both treated with NPK fertilizers) but the quantity of Zn removed by the harvest was lower by 10%. Liming is able to reduce soil Zn availability.
