Changes in boar semen with a high and low level of morphologically abnormal spermatozoa

The aim of this study was to find out the level of changes in the sperm quality in two groups of boars (A and B) with an interval of 25 weeks between semen collections I and II. In the group A, there were 22 boars with the content of abnormal spermatozoa (AS) up to 10%, in the group B, the AS was above 40% in 16 boars in collection I. Quantitative parameters were comparable, but the two groups differed significantly in AS content and age. The collection II was characterized by an increased semen volume. Spermatozoa numbers per ejaculate and per day increased significantly in the group A. The dynamics in the sperm production per ejaculate was higher in the group A than in the group B. No boars from the group A exceeded the AS limit for boars used in artificial insemination (25%). Our results show that spermatogenesis had a hereditary component. Therefore, the level of AS may be used when choosing boars for artificial insemination.
