Four intact crossbred dairy cows (mean milk yield 21.9 kg/d) fed a total mixed ration (TMR, maize silage, lucerne hay and concentrate) were used in two experimental periods in order to determine true and apparent digestibilities of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude proteins (CP), neutral detergent fibres (NDF) and starch. The method using nylon capsules was compared with the conventional in vivo method. Nylon capsules (external diameter 10 mm) were made of nylon cloth (pore size 42 microm). They were filled with TMR and administered orally as a paper bolus into the cows at the beginning of the in vivo trial. The values of true digestibility (after washing loss correction) of DM and OM determined using nylon capsules were significantly lower by -6.9 and -7.3%, respectively, than those estimated by the in vivo method. Insignificant differences were found in CP, NDF and starch digestibilities.
