The occurrence of fungi, viruses and insects on main woody species in riparian stands along the middle courses of the Slatina and Hron rivers (Slovakia) was monitored form 2002 to 2004. Forty fungal species, rusts and viruses and 79 insect species were found. The highest number of fungi occurred on the branches and twigs of poplar with Cryptodiaporthe populea and Phellinus igniarius as the most frequently represented species. Melampsora alliipopulina, Poplar mosaic carlavirus, Venturia populina and Venturia tremulae dominated on the leaves. The principal fungi on aspen trees were Armillaria sp. and Phellinus igniarius. Valsa oxystoma, Inonotus radiatus, Inonotus obliquus and a new Phytophthora hybrid occurred on the alder. Concerning insect pests, Melasoma vigintipunctata and Phyllodecta vitellinae caused total defoliation on willows. Black poplars were attacked mainly by Pemphigus spirothecae, alders by Cryptorrhinchidius lapathi and Agelastica alni.
