Filth-test on tomato preserves and baby foods

Different kinds of commercial tomato preserves (crushed tomatoes, sieved tomatoes, peeled tomatoes, tomato concentrates, chopped tomatoes, sliced peeled tomatoes, and cherry tomatoes) and homogenised baby foods were examined for the first time by using the technique of filth-test according to the methods proposed by AOAC. The results indicate that solid impurities found in canned tomatoes and homogenised infant foods are mainly composed of whole arthropods and their fragments. Insects constituting the main fraction of contaminants found in this investigation belong to typical species infesting stored products. As packages were intact, the AA suppose that the infestation originated during raw products storage or food manufacturing. This finding, and particularly the discovery of a mouse hair in a sample of fruit infant food, emphasizes unsatisfactory hygienic-sanitary conditions in warehouses or food-processing environments. It follows that, according to Italian law requirements (n. 283, April 30th, 1962), the commercial products investigated in the present study should not be suitable for human consumption

Alcune tipologie di conserve di pomodoro (polpa, passata, pelati, concentrati, pezzettoni, filetti e ciliegini interi) e di omogeneizzati per l'infanzia, esaminati per la prima volta a tale proposito, sono stati sottoposti all'analisi del sudiciume (filth test) utilizzando le metodiche proposte dall'AOAC. Le impurità ritrovate nelle conserve di pomodoro e negli omogeneizzati sono costituite principalmente da artropodi, interi e loro frammenti; gli insetti che costituiscono la maggior parte degli infestanti appartengono a specie tipiche delle derrate. Tenendo conto del fatto che i contenitori non sono stati aperti, c'è da supporre che le infestazioni si siano sviluppate durante l'immagazzinamento delle materie prime o durante le diverse fasi di lavorazione. Questo evidenzia, a quanto pare, insufficienti condizioni igienico-sanitarie dei locali di stivaggio e trasformazione; il ritrovamento di un pelo di roditore in un campione di omogeneizzato a base di frutta ne è prova. Il risultato di queste indagini, visti alla luce della legge n. 283 del 30 aprile 1962, porta ad affermare che le conserve di pomodoro e gli alimenti per bambini analizzati non dovrebbero essere destinati al consumo
