Behavioural assessment of Westringia Wynyabbie Gem in a Mediterranean environment [Apulia]

This note is about a research conducted on Westringia Wynyabbie Gem, an Australian shrubby species, within the framework of the interregional programme "Supports for the flower sector" for selection and testing of new products in floriculture, possibility of adaptation to the Mediterranean climate, checking of ornamental features and market response. Biometric observations concerned the morphological, vegetative and phenological characteristics. As to vegetative features, the following parameters were tested: maximum plant height; canopy circumference; number of primary branches; mean length of branches; canopy density. As to phenology, the flowering abundance was assessed. The results of the research have pointed out that Westringia Wynyabbie Gem fits well to the Mediterranean climatic conditions; plants showed to be Winter hardy and resistant to both prolonged drought and pest attacks

Si riferiscono i risultati di una ricerca su Westringia Wynyabbie Gem, specie arbustiva di origine australiana, effettuata nell´ambito del programma interregionale "Supporti per il settore floricolo" per la selezione e il collaudo delle novità di prodotto in floricoltura, la possibilità di adattamento al clima mediterraneo, la verifica delle caratteristiche ornamentali e la valutazione da parte del mercato. Le osservazioni biometriche hanno riguardato le caratteristiche morfologiche, vegetative e fenologiche. Per quanto riguarda le caratteristiche vegetative, sono stati presi in esame: altezza massima della pianta; circonferenza della chioma; numero di rami primari; lunghezza media dei rami; compattezza della chioma. Per quanto riguarda i caratteri fenologici, è stato valutato il carattere abbondanza di fioritura. I risultati della ricerca hanno evidenziato che Westringia Wynyabbie Gem si adatta bene nell´ambiente climatico mediterraneo; le piante si sono dimostrate rustiche e resistenti sia alle condizioni di aridità prolungata, sia agli attacchi parassitari
