Itraconazole used to treat disseminated cryptococcosis in a cat seropositive for feline leukemia virus

A 2-year-old Japanese domestic cat seropositive for feline leukemia virus and demonstrating multiple skin lesions, lymphadenopathy, nystagmus, and loss of the pupil light reflex was diagnosed as a case of cryptococcosis. Although daily administration of itraconazole (10mg/kg, SID, po) caused improvement in these clinical symptoms, 6 months after initial administration, reduction of the number of administrations (to twice every 5 days) resulted in anterior uveitis and subcutaneous mass lesions. Restoring daily administration relieved these symptoms; and 15 months after first admission to the clinic, the cat remained in good physical condition with no drug-related side effects. Itraconazole treatment may be useful for long-term management of cats with disseminated cryptococcosis, although continuous daily administration may be necessary.
