Organic carbon content and carbon isotope composition were determined for 23 recent sediments in Ise and Mikawa bay and for 8 river sediments in Aichi prefecture, and the following were concluded. (1) The range of the deltaC13 values was from -24.4 to -19.9%, (average -21.8) for the marine recent sediments and from -26.6 to -21.2% (average -24.7) for the river sediments. The marine sediments were apparently enriched with C13 than the river sediments. (2) Fraction of terrestrial organic carbon in the marine sediments was estimated with isotope mass balance. There were several locations about Nagoya harbour and the river mouth of Toyo river, at which terrestrial organic carbon had majority. (3) However, the area where terrestrial organic carbon affected the marine sediments was remarkably limited small. For the other area such as the center of the bays, the deltaC13 values were approximately in agreement with those of marine planktons.
