Effects of moisture content, bulk denisity and orgnic matter on denitrification on upland soils

Effects of various environmental factors concerning the denitrification process on upland soils were investigated using columns. Each column was packed with Light-colored Andsol and Gray Lowland Soils. We determined the denitrification rate of two different kinds of soils during the growing season of maize by the combination of an intact core method and the technique with acetylene inhibition. The cores were taken from three layers (0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, 20-30 cm). 1) The logarithms to the denitrification rates were correlated with the gaseous phase ratio of soils. 2) The denitrification rates in upland soils were estimated by moisture content and bulk denisity. 3) The denitrification rates in the surface layer (0-10 cm) of maize fields applied chemical fertilizer were reasonably reproduced by moisture content and bulk denisity. 4) When manure was applied in upland soils, the denitrification rates in the subsurface layer were generally higher than those in the surface layer irrespective of the soils. 5) The denitrification rate on upland soils applied organic matter should be estimated by the amount of readily decomposable organic matter and denitrifying activity in soils in addition to moisture content and bulk denisity.
