Improvement of grain protein content by the non-split application of fertilizer in wheat culture

To improve the grain protein content and to save labor for fertilizing, the non-split application of fertilizer was evaluated compared with conventional fertilizing in wheat culture of Aichi prefecture, Japan. The quick acting fertilizer such as ammonium sulfate, the linear type controlled-release urea LP30 and the sigmoid type one UT30 were blended equivalently in Nitrogen contents and put as the basal dressing just before seeding variety Norin-61 which was very popular in Aichi prefecture. Non-split application by the blended fertilizer improved nitrogen recovery rate in wheat plant and raised grain protein contents compared with split application. Besides, the grain yields of both application showed no significant difference. LP30 started to release nitrogen N as soon as they were applied and continuously released N till harvesting time according to soil temperature however about 20 percents of N had still remained in soil after harvesting. UT30 was estimated to start releasing at mid February and 60 percents N was released till heading time and about 95 percents till maturing time. We have been considering that the nitrogen-release from seeding time to the maximum tiller number stage and also during the maturing period were effective to increased the protein contents in wheat grain. So, these nitrogen releasing pattern of UT30 and LP30 were thought to be adapted for the growth phase of our cultivation system. As the result of this experiment, it was learned that by using the non-split application of controlled-release fertilizer, wheat protein contents were increased about 0.5% compared with conventional fertilizing without a yield drop.
