Cropping behavior of farm household cultivating rice using "Aigamo" crossbred ducks: A focus on risk aversion and the effect of experience accumulation

The purpose of this study is to consider the cropping behavior of farm households cultivating rice using "Aigamo" (Aigamo farmer) crossbred ducks. We present a cropping allocation model that is focused on risk aversion and the effect of experience accumulation, and investigate differences in information acquisition between innovators and followers. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, Aigamo farmers adjust the risk of yield variance to determine the cropping share of Aigamo rice farming. Second, experience accumulation plays a vital role in determining cropping share. Third, technical information acquisition differs among the types of Aigamo farmers and the channels of information dissemination. Technical information accumulated by each innovator complementarily contributes to the expansion of Aigamo rice farming. In addition, Aigamo rice farming has been spreading through the eastern region to the western region with Kyushu as the starting point. This study's policy implication of is that it is effective for technical information to be offered to the channels of information that are often used by followers in order to diffuse Aigamo rice farming to future producers smoothly. This study also suggests that it is important to adopt a policy that gives opportunities for exchanging technical information between innovators and eliminates barriers for acquiring technical information.
