Recruitment and dispersal for the vent-endemic invertebrates in the chemosynthesic communities are very important life events determining the fate of the population, and the planktonic larvae arc the only stage to accomplish such mission. Recent studies have been addressed on the larvae from ecological and evolutionary perspectives. In the present paper, we review recent reports with a focus on vent-endemic crustacean larvae and current sampling methods for them. To elucidate further larval dispersal and recruitment, it is necessary to improve plankton sampling and to investigate near-bottom flow and hydrothermal plume features on vent field as well as ongoing larval biology. We emphasize that planktonic larvae of vent-endemic species are also important as intermediaries between photosynthetic and chemosynthetic ecosystems and that their strict endemicity to hydrothermal vent fields must be attributed to ecological characteristics of planktonic larvae.
