The possibility of water surface greening by the floating plant box system at the sea mingled with fresh water region where salt concentration is high

The planting experiment was conducted using two kinds of floating plant boxes at the down stream region of Wakagawa-river where the average river water salt concentration should set 2.0% or more. The structure of one type of floating plant box "using river water type" was as follows; The soil layer undersurface receives moisture supply in contact with the river water surface. The next type of floating plant box "using rain water type" was made to dissociate from the water surface and let only rain be the source of water supply of water. The results of the investigation for 22 months from April, 2003 to January, 2005 were follows; l) On the "using river water type" plant box. Cyperus alternifolius was the most well adapted plant. 2) On the "using rain water type" plant box, Eurya emarginata was the most well adapted plant. 3) It was judged that they were not suitable for planting in such an environment since nine sorts of other plants (Phragmites australis, Aster tripolium, Dendranthema pacificum, Nipponanthemum nipponicum, Aster spathulifolius, Delosperma cooperi, Arundo danax, Pittosporum Tobira and Rhaphiolepis indica) withered and died within 22 months.
