Development of stownet on anchor fishery: Its establishment in Ariake Sound [Japan] and fishing trip to the colonized Korean Sea

This paper describes the history of stownet on anchor fishery since its birth in Ariake Sound to spread up to the colonized Korean Sea. Stownet on anchor fishery is a kind of set net and had developed at big tidal flow area like Ariake Sound or the Yellow Sea. This fishery has a potential to enlarge in size and to advance off-shore which implies an economic importance. This fishery was born in 1854 at Kumamoto district and had expand to Nagasaki, Saga, and Fukuoka along Ariake Sound as an effective compact fishery together with a diversification of the method according to target species. Since 1900 this fishery had at last advanced to Japanese colonized Korean Sea due to an abundant of Korean people's preferable fish, croaker and no obstacle to fishing activity at inner country, while resource and productivity in Ariake Sound had dropped by an increase of the gear. Advanced to the Korean Sea had been conducted as a seasonal trip for seasonal fishing. Then this fishery had been transferred from Japanese to Korean because they had experienced to another type of stownet fishery and could get Japanese boat and gear at proper price when Japanese go back. Thus, this fishery had been representative fishery both in Ariake Sound and in Korean Sea under colonization.
