Fungi decompose organic compounds and metal ions in natural environment. At the same time, fungi are very sensitive to the action of toxic substances and therefore can be used as water pollution indicators. Water bodies constitute an environment where fungi may appear in vide variety of species. Number species of fungi mainly depends on the amount of organic matter, oxygen presence, temperature, acidity and water irradiation. Aquatic fungi mineralize organic matter and through this they help with natural purification of water. Mycological studies were concerned with flowing waters of North Eastern part of Poland as the Czarna Hancza River. Thirty two fungus species representing anamorphic Ascomycetes (3), anamorphic Basidiomycetes (1), Chytridiomycetes (3) and Peronosporomycetes (22), Plasmodiophorales (1), Zygomycetes (2) were found in various sites of the Czarna Hancza River. Achlya americana, A. polyandra, Aphanomyces laevis, Ap. irregularis, Catenophlyctis variablis, Dictyuchus monosporus, Pythium debaryanum and Saprolegnia ferax were the most dominant species of fungus.
