The authors quantify the relationship between A individual_s pollen staining behavior with the amount of selfed seed. Spikelet samples from 810 plants in the breeder seed production plots were collected and evaluated for pollen type and staining behavior. About 500 pollen grains/sample were counted and categorized into: Unstained Withered Sterile (UWS), Unstained Spherical Sterile (USS), Stained Round Sterile (SRS) and Stained Round Fertile (SRF). Relative frequency of each category was expressed as percentage of the total number of pollen grains examined. One panicle of each sampled plant was bagged for identification of possible selfed seed. There was significant positive correlation (P seed 0.01) between percent SRF and number of selfed seed for the DS (r = 0.23) and WS (r = 0.25). On the other hand, there was significant negative correlation (P less 0.05, r = 0.57) between UWS and number of selfed seed during the WS. Percent SRF pollen of IR58025A is associated with the number of its selfed seed.
