Impact of micro-credit on poverty alleviation and agricultural production -A case study of NRSP, D.G. Khan region [Pakistan]

The existence of wide spread poverty in the midst of global prosperity isundeniably the most serious challenge confronting the world today. Pakistan isalso encountered with burgeoning poverty problem, which is largely rural innature. The provision of micro credit through National Rural SupportProgramme (NRSP) has been considered as the latest panacea for povertyalleviation. The present research was conducted during 2002-2003 to study theimpact of micro credit on agricultural production, poverty status, income,consumption and savings of the farmers in Dera Ghazi Khan Region. Correlationand regression analyses were employed in addition to averages andpercentages. The results indicated positive changes in agricultural production,poverty status, income, consumption, saving and farm expenditure after theutilization of credit. Correlation results of the data showed that there was apositive relationship between credit size and income, home consumption, savingand farm expenditure. The results of the regression analysis were also foundsignificant.
