Energy inputs for the production of wheat in the Barani tract include energyin the form of labour, tractor and/or any other power-source. Energy is requiredfor tillage, seedbed preparation, planting, pumping of water, harvesting, threshingand miscellaneous uses. The major requirement of energy is for irrigationpurposes, compared to other operations, especially in the Barani tract, wherefarming is not fully mechanized. Profitability of wheat is a major concern forpumped-water irrigation, which can be achieved by reducing the cost of inputsand thus optimizing the cost of produce. The present study not only comparesirrigation-operation with rest of the operations of crop-production, but alsocompares Barani, Basin complete irrigation, and supplemental irrigation usingRaingun sprinklers, in terms of water and energy-use efficiency for production oforganic wheat in the Barani tract. The highest combined energy and water-useefficiency of 1.85 g/m -kWh was observed for supplemental irrigation usingRaingun sprinklers, followed by Basin complete irrigation (0.75 g/m3-kWh) andBarani farming (1.23 g/m3- kWh). Therefore, it can be concluded that Raingunsprinkler irrigation, under the concept of supplemental irrigation, is efficient interms of both energy and water use.
