This study reports production and marketing of Flue Cured VirginiaTobacco in three villages of district Mansehra during 2004. Primary data werecollected through a pre-tested questionnaire. The results of the study revealedthat grower's education was directly related to more tobacco cultivation.Tobacco yield had tremendously increased during the past 15 years. Withexperience the growers had found tobacco-peas-tobacco as the best croppingpattern adopted by 65% of the respondents. Average estimated net profit perhectare from tobacco production was Rs. 5,844, potato Rs. 36,430, tomato Rs.23,800 and onion Rs. 28,000, however due profit in crop rotation, sure disposal,self-employment and fixed minimum prices have made tobacco a crop of choicefor farmers. Among the respondents 64% were tenants, 14% landowners and 21%were owner-cum- tenants. A large majority (83%) of the respondents wasfarmers. Pakistan Tobacco Company and Lakson Tobacco Company were the twomajor companies working in the area having market share of 79 and 21%,respectively. Farmers having interaction with extension workers has got betteraverage price of tobacco leaf. Cultivation problems identified included pests anddiseases, natural calamities, lack of skilled labour, fuel and high prices ofinputs, whereas marketing problems reported were: low prices for curedtobacco, more farmers at a single sale point and non-availability of farm tomarket pakka roads.
