Synthesis and herbicidal activity of halocinnamic acids

Twelve halocinnamic acids were synthesized employing knoevenagel condensation between malonic acid and interested aromatic aldehydes. These halocinnamic acids were further evaluated for their potential as herbicidal agents against Mimosa pigra Linn. and Echinochlo crus-qalli Beauv. The results revealed that the activity was greatly influenced by the structural deviation of these compounds and type of weeds. Some synthesized halocinnamic acids displayed promising tendency to be developed as new herbicides.
