Effect of sun shade methods on growth and yield of Khuuns (Colocacia gigantea Hook. f.)

Effect of sun shade materials on yields of white and black khuuns (Colocacia gigantea Hook. f.) was conducted at Sakon Nakhon Agricultural Research and Training Center during March to August, 2000. Fifty percent of plastic screen sarans including single green ayer, double green layer, single black layer and double black layer were used as sun shade materials for white and black Khuuns. Results indicated that growth rate and yield of both Khuuns were maximized with the double green layer saran. The white Khuuns had average 136.5 centimeters high, 11.1 shoots per plant, 9.1 leaves per plant, 53.7 centimeters of leaf blade long, 103.5 centimeters of leaf sheath long, 2.93 centimeters of leaf sheath thickness, and 1,858 grams per sheath of leaf sheath weight. The black Khuuns had average 133.0 centimeters high, 2.8 shoots per plant, 6.5 leaves per plant, 50.0 centimeters of leaf blade long, 101.4 centimeters of leaf sheath long, 2.07 centimeters of leaf sheath thickness, and 1,886 grams of leaf sheath weight per plant. Both Khuuns had low yield when single black layer saran was used as shading.
