Lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins of non-immune origin which are able to specifically agglutinate cells and precipitate glycoconjugates. Lectins was purified from plasma of female grouper by chromatography method or polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis respectively. The purified lectin showed a single band in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under nondenaturing condition. It had a molecular weight of 851,100 Daltons. Plasma lectin was induced by exogenous estradiol injection. In addition, the relationships of plasma lectin and vitellogenin levels with ovarian development of female Groupers showed a comparison pattern of change. both increased rapidly from October and reached the maximal level just prior to oval maturation and decreased sharply after spawning in December. Since the change of votellogenin level in plasma correlatesd well with ovarian development of female grouper, these results indicate that the plasma lectin may involve in ovarian development of grouper.
