Effect of chlorine treatment, setting spears in water and packing method on postharvest quality of asparagus UC no.309 was conducted in similar to export of asparagus to European market. Washing spears in water with chlorine from either Ca(OCl)2 or NaOCl at concentrations of 100-400 ppm had decay only 2.09-5.11 percent whereas those washed in water without chlorine had decay up to 32.50 percent. Setting spears in tap water at level of 2-10 cm for 1-5 hr had no significant effect on fiber content but setting spears in water at levels of 2 cm for 1 hr gave the least fiber content. Setting spears in water at temperatures of 1+-1 deg C and 28+-1 deg C had no significant effect on fiber content but at higher temperature gave less fiber content. Dry and wet packing spears in corrugated boxes had no significant effect on fiber content but wet packing caused more decay of spears.
