Non-destructive inspection of mango fruit (Mangifera indica L.) with soft x-ray imaging

Sofe X-ray film imaging were used to predict the presence of mango seed weevil in intact fruit. X-ray film image of a weevil-infested mango has a distinct feature of dark great patches corresponding to the internal cavities within the seed indicating weevil infestation. A self contained cabinet X-ray with a 0.25 inch thick beryllium window was used for the study. A line scan X-ray machine with 0.5 mm resolution provided the same image clarity as the X-ray film and a potential for rapid detection of seed weevil in intact fruit. A portable baggage line-scanner with a 2 mm resolution provided poor quality images hence increased sorting error. To compensate for the low resolution, belt speed was reduced to enlarged the X-ray image. This however, showed no significant improvement in the sorting process. Detecting weevil infestation was difficult during the early mango season as the degree of seed damage is minimal or when the weevil is still at the young larval stage. Degree of infestation and seed damage however increased as the fruit mature.
