Phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium content in the aboveground biomass in the Virginia and Oriental tobaccos

The accumulation in different organs of the tobacco plant of essential for the raw material tobacco nutrition elements (phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium) is studied in two tobacco types – Oriental and Virginia – in a stationary experiment on Rendzina and Alluvial meadow soils. Similarity regarding the accumulation of macro elements in the different tobacco plant parts in both types of tobacco is found. The phosphorus content is the lowest in the stems and the highest in the racemes. The concentration of the element in the leaves is the highest in the upper harvesting zone. The content of potassium in the stems is commensurable with that in the leaves. The concentration of the element in the lower and especially in the harvesting zone of the oriental tobacco maintains an approximately low level due to the high content of calcium in the soil. The highest quantity of potassium is accumulated in the racemes. The correlation potassium/ c alcium in the leaves of the lower harvesting zone is very low which is a precondition for the obtaining of raw material with worse elastic properties. In the leaves from the middle and upper zone of the Virginia tobacco, it is close to the optimal one. The removing of the racemes in the opening stage of flowering could contribute to the accumulation of phosphorus and potassium in the leaves which are the main trade products.
