Krishkov, E.
Bitter pit in apple fruits is a physiological disorder, which, in separate years, can cause serious damages in some apple cultivars. Although its incidence mechanism is not completely explained yet, the relation between its appearance and fruit trees nutritional regime is already proven. Bitter pit incidence is directly connected to calcium nutrition of fruits and fruit supply with sufficient amounts of calcium is a key moment for the provision of adequate content of this nutrient during fruits harvesting and storage. Apart from calcium content, the degree of bitter pit incidence is also related to that of potassium and magnesium. In the present review paper the results achieved in determination of the factors influencing bitter pit appearance as well as the main control measures are discussed.
