Apple and pear production in the province of Warmia and Mazury in last six years of the previous administrative division and first six years of the newly established province of Warmia and Mazury is presented. Despite a considerable increase in the area of the province, the area occupied by orchards significantly decreased (about 25%). Additionally, the production of apples and pears has increased by 2-3 times, depending on the year, in comparison to crops recorded in the former area of the province. There was a clear increase in the production of apples and pears in relation to the gross domestic production from 0.1-0.4% to 0.5-0.7%. In the province of Warmia and Mazury, air temperatures and rainfall in May and June significantly influenced the production volume of apple and pear crops. While analyzing the area occupied by orchards in Olsztyn province and the current area of the province of Warmia and Mazury, an increase was observed. Larger yield crops is obtained from a smaller area. In 1996, orchards occupied, together with fruit shrubs, 3,700 ha, and in the new administrative structure – only 1,800 ha. The largest decrease, even down to 73,3% of the area was observed in the case of fruit shrubs.According to the guidelines related to horticulture production by Warmia and Mazury Provincial Office and the Marshall Office, the production of apples should be further developed, particularly based on varieties intended for processing and export. Pear production should re,ain at the current level due to more severe climatic conditions in comparison to other areas of Poland
