Triploid Hybrids Derived from Solanum Stoloniferum and Their Value in Potato Breeding | Híbridos triploides derivados de Solanum Stolonífenun y su valor en el mejoramiento de la papa

Se utilizaron varios clones seleccionados de la especie tetraploide 2n = 4x=48, Solanum stoloniferum Schlechdt et Beché (sto) obtenidos del Proyecto IR-1 USD A, para lograr cruzamientos con las especies diploides 2n = 2x=24 5. phureja Juz. et Buk. (phu),S. brevidens Phil. (bre) y 5. chacoense Bitt (che). Se obtuvieron híbridos Ft triploides, 2n = 3x=36, de buen vigor y que produ¬cían considerable cantidad de polen pero, como era de esperarse, con baja fertilidad. Sin embargo, el escaso polen viable resultó ser muy funcional al emplearlo en cruzamientos con clones tetraploides de S. tuberosum spp. tuberosum (tbr) y S. tuberosum spp. andigena (adg), 2n = 4x=48. Así se obtuvieron híbridos de primeros retrocruzamientos (BQ) que poseían muy buenas características en los BC1; incluyendo alto rendimiento, buen tipo de tubérculos, resistencia a Phytophthora infestans, a PVY y PLRV, provenientes probablemente por la incorporación de los genes valiosos de las especies silvestres utilizadas.

Several selected clones of the tetraploid potato species 2n=4x=48, Solanum stoloniferum Schlechted et Beché (sto) obtained from the IR-1-USDA pro-ject were utilized to make crosses with the diploid species, 2n=2x = 24 S. phureja Juz. et Buk, (phu), S. brevidens Phil. (bre) and S. chacoense Bitt (che). Triploid, 2n=3x=36, F, hybríds were obtained, with high vigor and producing fair amount of pollen but, as it was expected, low pollen viability. However, the scarce fertile pollen was quite functional when used in crosses to selected tetraploid Solanum tuberosum spp. tuberosum (tbr) and S. tube-rosum spp. andigena (adg) 2n = 4x = 48, clones. By this method, BC, hybrids were obtained that possessed good characters, including high yield, good tuber types, resistance to late blight, PVY and PLRV indicating a proper transfer of valuable genes from the wild species.
