Effects of rates of potassium, zinc and copper on the yield and quality of onions under saline conditions in two major onion growing regions of east azarbayjan

A completely randomized factorial block experiment was carried out in two major onion growing regions of East Azarbayjan to study the effects of potassium, zinc and copper on the yield and quality of onions under saline conditions using 27 treatments and 3 replications. Each nutrient was applied at three rates based on soil test, 1.5 times the soil test or twice the soil test requirements. Analysis of variance showed significant main effects (at 1% level) of potassium and zinc on onion yield, TSS content and nitrate levels in Bonab region. The best shelf life resulted from potassium, zinc and copper at twice the soil test requirements. Likewise, the hardest texture (1.623 kg/cm 2 ) was obtained with 400 kg potassium sulfate per hectare. The main effects of potassium, zinc and copper on the onion protein content were significant at 1% level with the highest protein level resulting from the application of the nutrients at rates twice the soil test requirements. The highest level of vitamin C content resulted from a combination of 400 kg potassium sulfate plus 80 kg zinc sulfate per hectare. Copper main effects on vitamin C content showed the best results at twice the soil test requirements, the highest pH and sugar content of onion juice resulted from the application of 400 kg potassium sulfate per hectare. The results in both regions were similar but in Bonab region due to saline conditions, the yield was lower.
