Chlorophylls a and b content development in wheat treated with a phosphonium compound [Triticum aestivum L.]

Chlorophylls a and b concentrations, which are strongly affected by both internal and external factors, represent important indicators about the health of higher plants, because these pigments act as photoreceptors in photosynthesis process. The present study offers data about the effect exhibited by different concentrations of a plant growth regulator containing phosphorus, namely iodotriphenylphosphonium triiodide, on the chlorophyll content variation in a monocotyledonous plant (wheat) treated with this compound. Chlorophylls concentrations were determined by analysis of the UVVis spectra of the extracted pigments in 80% acetone. The standard extinction equations (Lichtenthaler, 1987) were used for calculations. From the obtained data it is obvious that iodotriphenylphosphonium triiodide exhibits biological activity in wheat, especially at 50 ppm concentration, when both chlorophyll a and b concentrations are significantly increased and in good agreement with all the other changes concerning the general development of the monocotyledonous plant

[Le concentrazioni di clorofilla a e b, che sono influenzate fortemente da fattori interni ed esterni, rappresentano indicatori importanti riguardo allo stato fisiologico delle piante superiori, in quanto questi pigmenti agiscono come fotorecettori nel processo fotosintetico. Il presente studio presenta dati relativi all´effetto manifestato da concentrazioni diverse di un fitoregolatore contenente fosforo, precisamente iodotrifenilsolfonio triioduro, sulla variazione del contenuto di clorofilla in una monocotiledone (frumento) trattata con questo composto. Le concentrazioni di clorofilla sono state determinate mediante analisi degli spettri UVVis dei pigmenti estratti in acetone all´80%. Per i calcoli sono state utilizzate le equazioni di estinzione standard (Lichtenthaler, 1987). Dai dati ottenuti è ovvio che lo iodotrifenilfosfonio triioduro manifesta attività biologica sul frumento, specialmente alla concentrazione di 50 ppm, in corrispondenza della quale le concentrazioni, sia della clorofilla a, sia della clorofilla b, aumentano significativamente e in buon accordo con gli altri cambiamenti concernenti lo sviluppo generale della monocotiledone.]
