Residual efficacy, appropriate application dose and timing of copper bactericides and establishment of disease control system for bacterial shoot blight of tea [Camellia sinensis]

Copper bactericides are commercially used for control of bacterial shoot blight (BSB), caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. theae, which is one of the major disease in tea plant (Camellia sinensis). However, antibacterial actions of copper bactericide against BSB are poorly understood. We have aimed to establish the disease control system for BSB by estimation of residual efficacy, appropriate application dose and application timing of copper bactericides. Copper bactericide with kasugamycin had the longest residual efficacy than other tested bactericides. Optimum application dose of copper bactericide for BSB was considered to be 400 litters per 10a. The application of copper bactericide at initial incidence of BSB was important for efficient control. A disease control system, which was based on the application of copper bactericide with kasugamycin at initial incidence of BSB and regular application of copper bactericide once a month after initial incident, could control an outbreak of BSB.
