The objective of the present work was to investigate the rabies epidemiological situation during 2001-2005, since the long term ORV in Lithuania. During the period of 5 years (2001-2005) in Lithuania there were investigated 10283 rabies suspected samples among wild and domestic animals. Diagnosis of rabies was confirmed by laboratory tests in 4922 cases (3694 in wildlife and 1228 - in domestics). During the period of investigation, the animals' rabies cases were diagnosed in all the territory of Lithuania with 76 to 736 cases in different counties (110 rabies cases per district). During 1995-2000, ORV program in Lithuania was unsuccessful, but in April-May 2006 the oral vaccination with Lysvulpen rabies vaccine in wildlife was conducted in 36 of 44 districts in Lithuania as a first stage of long term ORV vaccination program (PHARE project, coordinated by EU Commission) in all Baltic regions.
