Self-concept and eating habits of the elderly in barangay [village] Mabuhay, Carmona, Cavite, Philippines

A study of 67 elderly in Barangay [village] Mabuhay, Carmona, Cavite was conducted to determine the relationship between self-concept and eating habits and to describe the influences of different social factors on the eating habits of the elderly. Social factors include those at the individual level such as gender, educational attainment, marital status, health status, employment, and leisure activities, family level such as eating practice, family size and composition, and family relationships, and community level such as affiliation with organizations and religious involvement. Data collection was done using self-assessment questionnaires for self-concept and eating habits, and an interview for social factors. Correlation analysis revealed a highly significant positive relationship between self-concept and eating habits and varying degrees of relationship between different social factors and eating habits. Social factors failed to meet the re quired level of significance due to the homogeneity of the population brought by the smallness of the age range used in this study. However, the trends established by correlation analysis proved that to some extent social factors are influential to eating habits, and that, these results can be used for further research employing larger age ranges or in comparison with different age groups.
