Comparative toxicity effects of selected insecticide on the brood of Apis cerana indica F.

In the present study, foragers of the India honey bee, Apis cerana indica, were exposed artificially to the residues of several insecticides sprayed on the flowers of Abelmoschus esculentus to predict the damage of honey bees in the field. Pesticide toxicity of residue on foraging bees and brood was evaluated based on mortality counts. The test insecticides BHC, carbaryl, cypermethrin and metasystox were toxic to bee larvae, with percent mortality varying between 13.63 percent to 22.4 percent. However, larval mortality was comparatively less than that of the adult bees. The residual toxicity of insecticides had affected the brood rearing activity of the honey bees. Brood rearing activity was considerably reduced during the first and second weeks after treatment. Carbaryl and dimethoate had a greater effect on brood rearing activity than BHC and cypermethrin.
