Studies on the effect of industrial pollution on Deg Nullah fisheries

Deg Nullah once fertile water body for the breeding and production of fish has now become almost non-productive due to inflow of untreated industrial effluents. Therefore, study, was carried out to asses the adverse effects of different types of industrial effluents on the physicochemical parameters of nullah water, its biological life and consequently fish production. Physicochemical parameters studied include monthly determinations of temperature (degree C), dissolved oxygen (mg/l), free carbon dioxide (mg/l), conductivity (mumho. Cm-l), total alkalinity (mg/l), total hardness (mg/l), pH, turbidity (NTU/Formazine), and iron (mg/l) of water samples collected from upstream/ downstream of Railway Bridge and direct effluents from industrial units at Muridke/ Sheikhupura Road. Industrial effluents from Ittehad Chemicals were highly toxic having very low pH (less than 2.0) and very high conductivity (up to 900,000 mumho. Cm-1). Biological studies included counting o f phytoplankton and zooplankton for the water samples monthly collected from upstream/downstream of Railway Bridge. Samples collected from upstream had members of Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and some species of zooplankton as well but samples from downstream were almost devoid of aquatic life. A few species of fish were caught from upstream Railway Bridge (non-polluted zone) but from downstream no fish specimen could be found. Only a few specimens of fish were found near the bank of nullah during summer season.
