Effect of some antibacterial agents on the in vitro and in vivo growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

In the present work, the in vitro and in vivo effect of certain antibacterial agents was studied on the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The in vitro studies were made by Holeplate diffusion method while the in vivo studies were made by injecting a dose of P. aeruginosa in the peritoneal cavity of fish Oreochromis aureus and later some antibacterial drugs were administered to treat the infection. The in vitro effects of different drugs as their mean zones of inhibition were found to be 10.66 mm, 3.00 mm, 7.33 mm, 2.66 mm, 4.00 mm, 8.00 mm, 4.66 mm for Streptomycin, Baptisia, Berberis, Camphora, Echinacea, Crystal violet and Malachite green respectively. After the intraperitoneal injection of 450x10 bacteria per ml, the fish developed the disease symptoms like redness of eyes, blackening of lower jaw, redness along the abdomen, sluggish activity, increased mortality and haemorrhage of opercular region. When the diseased fish were treated with Streptomycin, Berbe ris and Crystal violet separately, the inhibition observed in the viable count of P. aeruginosa after 6 days of treatment was 99.11 %, 99.86 % and 98.44 %, respectively. The disease symptoms gradually disappeared during treatment.
