Effect of some antibacterial agents on the in vitro and in vivo growth of Escherichia coli

In the present study, the in vitro and in vivo effect of certain antibacterial agents on the growth of E. coli and its pathogenicity after intraperitoneal injection in Oreochromis aureus was studied. When in vitro effect were studied as zones of inhibition, the mean zones of inhibition observed were 25.00mm, 13.00mm, 8.76mm, 8.00mm, 5.77mm, 20.88mm, 16.00mm and 13.06mm by Streptomycin, Berberis, Baptisia, Echinacea, Camphora, Malachite green, Crystal violet and Copper sulphate respectively. When O. aureus was injected intraperitoneally with a dose of 4.46x10 cells/ml of E. coli, they showed sluggish activity; low feeding activity; blackening of lower jaw, anus and margins of fins; haemorrhage in opercular and thoracic regions. When these diseased fish were treated with Streptomycin, Berberis and Malachite green separately, an inhibition of 97.88%, 97.64% and 98.09% respectively in the viable count of E. coli was observed on the 9th day of treatment. The body sym ptoms that had appeared earlier also gradually disappeared during the treatment.
