This study presents the characteristics of sewage sludges (SS) originating from municipal sewage treatment plants in the area of Wielkopolska in western Poland. On the basis of the research conducted in this area it was concluded that sewage sludges showed a diversified chemical composition, characterized by a high content of organic matter and nutrients, including, mainly, nitrogen, phosphate, magnesium and sulfur. At the same time, the analysed sewage sludges showed favourable parameters concerning the content of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Chemical extraction sequential analysis of heavy metals (HMs) contained in SS, conducted according to Zeien and Brummer's procedure (1989), showed the individual characters of the analysed chemical elements in spite of certain similarities in the fractional distribution of particular elements. Moreover, the analysed SS were characterized by a low content of 6 PAHs. Irrespective, however, of the discovered low concentration of these compounds, it was found out that they have a tendency to accumulate in the soil
