Three fungal species are causal agents of powdery mildew of sunflower: Sphaerotheca fuliginea, Erysiphe cichoracearum and Leveillula taurica. The first two species have been described in our country, but it has not been clarified which if the two is the dominant one. Regardless of causal agent, the symptoms are similar. Those are the mycelium, conidia ad conidophores which form a greyish-brown layer on old leaves. Powdery mildew is a minor disease which does not cause large damage in Serbia. The disease is seldom controlled by chemicals because of successful breeding for resistance.
