Maize breeding at the Resarch Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, Serbia, has long tradition. So far we have released 189 maize hybrids in Serbia and 53 of them we have released in foreign countries. NS maize hybrids cover around 60% of maize surface in our country and significant surface in abroad. The most famous NS maize hybrids so far have been NS SC 70, NS 606, NS 444, NS 640, and now NS 6010. The most spread maize hybrid in the last decade in our country is NS 640. The last a few new hybrids coming as: NS 300, NS 3014, NS 402, NS 4010, NS 510, NS 507, NS 6010, Zenit, Radan and Tisa. Yield potential of NS maize hybrids from FAO 600 maturity groups is over 20 tones per hectare. NS 6010 has given the highest yield 18,640 kg/ha in 2005. Regions for maize production in Serbia are quite different on the basis of amount and distribution of rainfall across vegetation. Maize Department with a well trained breeding team, with a very good breeding material with good equipments and with a good relation with colleagues from extension services and our producer and long tradition in breeding has a good chances to be leader in maize breeding in future too.
