Effect of mechanical processing of wheat and maize corn on ruminal degradability of selected nutrients

Cereals grains are the major component of diets used for intensive production of livestock. The aim of this experiment was to determine the effective degradability of starch, crude protein, organic matter and dry matter in wheat and maize. The degradability was determined by the in sacco method in the rumen of three rumen fistulated young steers. Ground and crushed wheat and maize grain were used to compare degradability. The highest degradability of all nutrients was found in ground wheat, the lowest in crushed maize. The results show that grinding increases rumen degradability of all nutrients. The highest degradability of starch was found in ground wheat (93.5%), the lowest in crushed maize (66.5%). The effective degradability of crude protein was lower than the degradability of starch with values ranging from 48.6% in crushed maize to 70.2% in ground wheat. The degradability parameters of organic matter and dry matter were similar. The highest degradability was found in ground wheat: 81.1% for dry matter and 79.6% for organic matter.
