An increased number of leaf morphological abnormalities were identified in the plants treated with 5-azacytidine and cycasine, compounds influencing DMA methyltransferase activity, at first stages of germination. These abnormalities were observed in leaf blade, leaf petiole, leaf vagine and leaf tendril, their frequency being different in each treatment. Changed leaflet shape, two leaves growing from one node, a reduction in leaf pairs and the occurrence of terminal leaf in petiole were the most conspicuous changes identified. The occurrence of leaf abnormalities was more frequent in cycasine-treated plants. The main types of morphological abnormalities were processed, using the picture digitalisation method.
