Thiotrix is dominant filamentous type in activated sludge in the Wastewater Treatment Plant of the town Subotica, causing serious bulking problems during the most of the year. The aim of the study was to test the influences of extreme oxygen concentrations to Thiotrix in experimental and in situ conditions and check if the bulking could be controlled by increasing or decreasing oxygen concentrations in aeration tanks. The experiments showed that higher concentrations of oxygen damage filaments, causing their fragmentation, while filaments stay vital if cultured 3 days in low oxygen conditions. Increasing oxygen level in aeration tanks for 5 days caused similar damages of Thiotrix, reducing the length of filaments and bulking level. These results refer that, in the case of Subotica WWTP, the oxygen concentrations in aeration tanks should be regulated according to ecological valence of activated sludge organisms and not only according to the characteristics of the influent.
