Because of the presence of some pesticides, heavy metals, chlorinated hydrocarbons and other harmful matter in the environment, there is a pressing necessity of their removal. In this study, the efficiency of TiO2 as photocatalyst for removal the herbicide RS-2-(4-chloro-o-tolyloxy)propionic acid (mecoprop) from aqueous suspension using artificial visiable-light was compared with sunlight and UV light, as well as direct photolysis with visiable-light, sunlight and UV light. Spectrophotometric determination showed that the rate of mecoprop decomposition in the presence of visiable light is 0.86 micromol/cubic dm, which is about four times higher in comparison to direct photolysis.
