In 15-20 years old Kawano Wase orchards in Ulcinj, Montenegro, individual trees with considerably earlier ripening season than mother plant were recorded. For this reason, the breeding work was directed towards singling out selections with earlier ripening season as compared to mother plant, whereas other properties were the same or better. The fruits of early ripening cultivars sell better on market, the competition in terms of import of mandarines from the neighbouring countries is avoided, and the trees enter earlier into dormancy period. The study results have indicated that selections R.H.IV/2 and R.H.IV/4 have earlier ripening time, give higher yield per tree and have larger fruits. The flesh is juicy, with higher sugar content, less acids, aromatic and of a pleasant sweet-acid flavour.
