Biological and pomological characteristics of columnar apple hybrids

The main selection aim of the columnar breeding program in Novi Sad (Serbia) is the development of new cultivars with different ripening seasons, good cropping and fruit quality, with either yellow or green skin and no overcolour or yellow ground colour with red overcolour, tolerant to disease and pests. The newest generation of hybrids, such as NS 21/11 and NS 12/128, are late maturing with good fruit attractiveness and quality, storage ability up to 6 months, tolerant to diseases. NS 11/34 has an ideal columnar habit combined with extremely regular flowering and very large fruit size, ripening on 5 September. Hybrids with green fruits, such as NS 3/193 and NS 4/168 are rare, ripening in the beginning of October. Selections with yellow fruits are very attractive but biennial.
