The methodology of rural determination and identification of rural Serbia

Differentiation of the rural region is a delicate task because it incorporates a number of heterogenous factors which help depict the rural ambient of a country. Considering the fact that in Serbia there have been no serious attempts to either differentiate rural from urban settlements or identify types of rural regions, the aim of this study focuses on the identification of the Serbian rural regions from the internationally adopted standards standpoint. Therefore, the objective of the study focused on initiating a mapping survey of the rural regions and defining them according to types represents an initial attempt in creating the rural development policy. Serbia will be faced with the demand in the near future and for this reason the attention of the study focuses on offering an overview of general mathodological principles and internationally accepted standards for the definition of rural regions expected to be respected by each country. Serbia was used as a case study for interpreting the results of implementation of EU and OECD definitions regarding ruralism. The further steps in defining types of rural regions and development trends in rural Serbia were also suggested.
