Soil moisture regime in spruce ecosystem during the growing season

Presented paper deals with water regime of the forest soil in the spruce ecosystem of Horna Orava region. Forest soils are characteristic for their alternation of horizons that have different physical and chemical characteristics parameters. Worsened hydric characteristics (high skeleton content and small water holding capacity) as well as soil solution osmotic pressure increase (due to increased allien compounds in the physiological profile) lead to specific soil moisture regime. Along with these factors also changing climatic conditions (higher air temperatures, precipitation deficits, high water consumption on evapotranspiration) play their specific role, too. Soil moisture varies mostly within interval of the soil moisture between hydro limit of the maximal capillary capacity and the wilting point. The condition with capillary movable water and sufticient supply of water for plants is present the most. On climatically dry and warm days soil water supply decreases, especially in the upper layers of the physiological profile of the soil(0-50 cm). Under extremely dry season the soil water in upper layers of the soil can decrease to its insufficient supplies. In such conditions and over a longer lasting dry season spruce is threatened by decrease of its ecological stability and resistance towards injurious agents.
