Compare of some substrates for watercress (Nasturtium officinales) in hydroponics

Watercress (Nasturtium officinales) was cultured in nutrient solution by Deep Flow Technique (DFT) to compare substrate as conglomerate size 0.1-0.5 cm, limestone size 0.5-1.0, 1.0-2.0 and 2.0-3.5 cm for root supporting. The terminal shoot of watercress was taken from Amphur Batong, Changwat Yala. The experiment was established during January 22nd to March 9th 2001 in a glasshouse roofed with fiberglass. Temperature in house range 26-30 deg C, humidity 84 percent, temperature of solution around of plant roots range 26-29 deg C and control concentration of solution had electrical conductivity (EC) at 1.0-1.8 ms/cm and pH 6.5-6.8. The results showed that the plants grew in limestone size 2.0-3.5 cm and size 1.0-2.0 cm exhibited higher growth of length on branch and bud initiation (70.32-73.66 cm and branch 21.97-23.26) than those in the other substrates. 45 day after growing, there was no significant different among treatments in number of nodes, but the yield of watercress in limestone size 1.0-2.0 cm was average highest. (0.182 kg/tree).
