Effect of stem length and fibre content at stem-end on vase life of cut chrysanthemum

Six cultivars of standard type and four cultivars of spray type of cut chrysanthemums were harvested with the stem length of 50, 60, 70 and 80 cm. The first half of both cultivars was placed individually in distilled water to examine vase life. The other half was cut 5 cm long from stem-ends and was analysed for fibre content. The results showed that vase life of cut chrysanthemums decreased with increasing in stem length in every cultivars of both standard and spray types. By contrast, fibre contents in stem ends increased with increasing stem length, especially in cvs. Dusky Queen and J25. This indicates that, in general. Fibre content in the stem end affected vase life of chrysanthemum. Regarding vase life of flowers, the recommended stem lengths would be 50 cm for Dusky Queen, 50-60 cm for TW12, Mimi, TW10, 50-70 cm for Californian Wonder, J25, Yellow Knight, Refour and 50-80 cm for W1 and Glamour.
